SOPHOMORE COURSE SELECTION

booksSophomore Course Selection has begun!

We are beginning the planning for the 2016-2017 School Year.   Junior year is an important year for the students.  This is the time that they begin tailoring course selection based on their interests beyond high school.

Today we met with the Sophomore class and opened up the course request portal for the students for Junior Course Selection.  Here are the highlights of our meeting today and some tips/reminders for course selection.

  • Please review the course selection guide.  Click here to open the guide.
  • Review the presentation the Sophomores received today.  Click here for the presentation. (you will need to log into the website to view)
  • Log on to the Grading Portal (PowerSchool) and begin your course selection.  Click here for step by step directions. (you will need to log into the website to view)
  • Course Selections must be submitted on or before Monday, February 22.   Students cannot submit partial selections. Students must select between 35 to 36 credits to submit their classes.
  • Please discuss Course Selections with parents and teachers.

Special notes for Sophomores to consider in the Course Selection Process for Junior Year

  • Graduation Requirements should be reviewed and considered!
  • Students are required to take 4 years of Religion, English and Math.
  • All students must take 3 years of a Science which must include Biology and Chemistry.
  • Rose only requires 2 years of a World Language. Most colleges like to see 3 to 4 years of the same World Language.  Please be sure to consult with your current World Language teacher and investigate the expectations of colleges to which you may apply.
  • All students are required 3 years of Social Studies – World History, US 1 and US 2. Junior students interested in beginning a humanities sequence or other full year electives are welcome to postpone US 2 until their senior year.  Your counselor will be happy to discuss this option when you meet.
  • Colleges will have expectations for admissions. Be sure to investigate requirements of some colleges you are interested in investigating.
  • There are pre-requisites for courses. The system is designed to only allow selection of courses for which you are eligible.  This is not a perfect process.  If you feel you should select a course and it is not available – do not panic, simply choose another course in the same category and your counselor will put the correct course in your selection when you meet.  Do not select courses for which you are not eligible.  You will be removed from these classes.
  • On-line selection provides a discussion point for counselors. Please complete the selection by February 22 to the best of your ability.  Always remember Course Selections are NOT final until a student has met with a guidance counselor, has received a print out of their choices and the print out has been signed by the parent and student.  Your initial selection is not binding.  Do not be afraid to submit your initial selection.  The sooner this initial selection is complete, the sooner the counselor can arrange an appointment.
  • Students may need to choose a course they are not sure about or have a counselor open up a course for selection.  Please do not panic if you need to select a choice your child may not want to take.  Counselors can remove classes that students were using as a place holder just to submit their course.
  • All juniors must select 1 full year elective and 2 semester electives.  Alternate selections must be classes the students are interested in and want to take.  There is a possibility alternates will be used. Students may not choose alternate courses that they have selected as a primary choice.
